Christianity was brought to the Dales in the early 12th Century by missionary monks from the monastic churches; priests fromBridlington Priory staffed Grinton Church, although it has Norman foundations. At first, Grinton served the whole of the upper Dale until a second church was built at Muker.A small church, owned by a convent in Teesdale, stood on a site at Arkle Town in Arkengarthdale.
